Recently I saw a post on an HR website where a human resources person asked others for “benchmark ideas” about how to maintain an environment that would help their company prevent unionization. The advice received amazed me. It was all these fancy buzz words like “a focused attitude survey,” “robust communications,” “peer review panels,” blah blah blah blah blah. I almost had a stroke…c’mon people. Let’s get back to the nuts and bolts instead of all this fancy stuff.
Neanderthal that I am, I decided to present an idea that I picked up from the days when dinosaurs roamed the HR world. Get out of your office….get out on the shop floor (or cube floor), talk to people while you are roaming around, listen to them and then act on their concerns. It’s so simple even a caveman can do it. You will be so much farther ahead from both a people and operational perspective instead of spending your time doing peer review panels, etc. etc. etc Besides, you might actually find it is the most enjoyable part of your day……I always did. What other job in the world can you wander around and shoot the bull with people and not be loafing?
Your visibility makes you real to your people…..unless you are a real stuffed suit. Have fun while you are out wandering around talking to your people. Now…..get out there! EVERY DAY……twice a day if you are really ambitious. (Note: It is ok to get out more than once) When you do, you will know how your people feel and what is important to them. Now THAT’S a benchmark strategy!
