I like to hit my audiences with reality when working as an employee retention speaker. One reality is, like it or not we hire the husband, the kids, the dog and even the ex when we hire a person. What affects them affects how your people perform on the job. Ask anyone who has a kid that is in trouble! You can sit on your hands and let these situations destroy your employee retention strategies or you can turn them into positives.
Fully 20% of employees are experiencing some sort of issue in their life at any one time. Those issues have a real impact on the state of mind of your people when they are writing a software program…or not writing it because they are thinking about their daughter who is talking about moving in with that loser boyfriend of hers. Your ability as an organization to QUICKLY connect people with the resources they need to get thru the “bumps in the road” is critical in keeping your people fully engaged and productive. Helping people to do so also sends a very positive message you truly do care. People remember when you are there for them even if they might never admit it. If you help them through the tough times, you, begin to seem “human” in their eyes. It is a lot harder to walk out on a PERSON than it is to walk out on a nameless, faceless “corporation.”
Organizations that demonstrate the “C” of caring in my C.R.A.P philosophy will engender good will, drive positive employee retention strategies for the organization and also do immense good for society. When your people are struggling with issues, and you know it, get them channeled to resources that will help them address their issues so that it does not affect their work and your employee retention.
