One of the most fun things for this employee retention speaker and employee retention author likes to hear is success stories from clients.  It’s so gratifying to hear what we try to do works.  I’m a huge proponent of C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise).  Why? Because C.R.A.P. Works!  One of my clients told me about something that happened to him just this past week that is indicative of C.R.A.P. working to build trust and relationships and drive employee retention.

While sitting in his office, the General Manager had a woman who worked in the plant come in to wish him a Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.  She also proceeded to give him a wonderful box of chocolates and thank him for everything he does.  He told her it wasn’t necessary to give him anything because as he says, “that’s what we do here.”  She looked at him and said, “It wasn’t that way until you came here.”  He was humbled by the kind words and was pretty much speechless.  She went on to say that all the employees in the plant say, “You do a lot of us.”  She then explained that everyone knows that he advocates for them, always has them in mind and genuinely cares.  Wow!  Now that is C.R.A.P. at work.  This is a quiet unassuming lady who felt compelled to mention that to the General Manager.

The fact that her and all the people in the plant recognize this is huge from an employee engagement and employee retention perspective…although that’s not why the GM does it.  It’s just part of his personality.  He and I talk a lot about C.R.A.P. and we have worked together for a while to build a Culture of C.R.A.P. in his plant.  But, let’s forget about all the mushy stuff for a bit and focus on the bottom line.  This is a manufacturing plant that is hot and not the cleanest because of the processes they are involved in.  They are also in a competitive business that doesn’t produce high tech products with margins that enable them to throw money at their people to buy employee retention with golden handcuffs.  The bottom line is that they have virtually ZERO turnover.  The GM and I are convinced it’s because they give their employees C.R.A.P.
