Culture is the Answer

Do you want great employee retention?  Do you want an organization that delivers sustainable results?  If you do, this employee retention speaker and employee retention author will tell you the answer is to build a culture that is people-centric in nature.  If you do, people will stay, they will be energized and they will produce results.  In the end, results are what matter because without results you don’t have an organization left.  Our problem is that the people in the schools have been telling the MBAs for years it’s about metrics and results.  So, that’s where the focus has been.  What this has produced is a revolving door of executives that focus solely on results and forget the people side of the culture.  Now, the chickens have come home to roost as my mother used to say.

When the focus is mainly on results, we do things that are at the expense of people.  At some point, people started to understand that and realized that there was no loyalty to them but only to the bottom line.  What that has produced is a mentality among people (particularly young people that saw what happened to their parents for being loyal) entire generations of young people that know it’s not to their advantage to be loyal because it got them nothing.  Combine that with a shift to a more knowledge-based environment and you see companies in trouble because they can’t keep the intellectual talent they need to run their organization.  The end result is that results disappear because you don’t have the people to produce them.

The answer is to focus on people. Take care of your people.  Give your employees C.R.A.P.® (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise).   If you take care of your people, your people will take care of you.  Yes…they still have to be led properly but they will be there for you when you need them. There are always a few that don’t do what needs to be done…then deal with them.  Don’t treat everyone like a piece of meat because you are obsessed with results or don’t know how to handle the few people that try to take advantage of you.  If you want effective employee retention strategies, the answer is to develop a people-centric culture.  When people see they are valued, they will not only be loyal, but they will be engaged and produce for you.  And that production will be sustainable because your focus is on the right thing…people.
