Helping Hand

This employee retention speaker and employee retention author was at an event and had the opportunity to chat with a President of a company who was in attendance.  After I finished the program, she and I got chatting about being there for your employees when they need you.  This could take place at virtually any time due to a lot of circumstances.  In this case, one of her employees had lost her house in a fire.  The family was living in an extended stay and, needless to say, that is not the place they wanted to be as the Christmas holidays were approaching.  When the President heard about this situation from her HR leader, she immediately said, “We have to do something to help.”

The company gave a very generous donation to the employee to start a fund for the employee.  This is the “C” in C.R.A.P…Caring at work!  They set it up so that they would match whatever employees would donate. Their donation got the ball rolling.  This employee was simply overwhelmed by this gesture when she received the money.  She had never anticipated this would happen but, as the President said, “We take care of our people because they are OUR people.  They are not just employees…they are OUR people.”  This employee retention trainer asked her what her company’s employee turnover was and the reply came back, “Virtually zero.”  That did not come as a surprise to this employee retention speaker.

I have talked in the past how my dad, was helped by his employer when I was a kid in high school.  His company was there when he needed them and they came through. When my dad came back after the event, you could not have asked for a more loyal employee.  He was loyal before, but after the event, as I tell my audiences when I deliver my Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.® program, my dad would have killed for the company.  He was the most dedicated and loyal employee you could ask for.  From an employee retention strategies perspective, the most important thing that the company got because they stepped up and helped my dad was the goodwill from other employees because my dad talked about how well he was treated.  I guarantee you, the employee who was helped out by this President did the same thing.

When the time comes to step up, you need to do it.  It matters.  It matters to the employee and it matters to your company’s employee retention.  Not only is it the right thing to do but it does help drive employee retention and loyalty.  As I tell my audiences…C.R.A.P. Works!
