All too often as an employee retention speaker and employee retention trainer, I see young people think that they are “special.”  This belief usually turns off their bosses and the organizations in which they work.  The negative to getting turned off by this is that we lose sight of the fact that, although they are not special, they are unique.  But it is not just young employees that are unique; it is all employees.  Every employee is unique.  We tend to make generalizations about groups of employees.  That can be dangerous when it comes to your employee retention strategies.

When approaching employee retention, it is important to understand how different generations view things.  That being said, I have seen people from one generation act like a person from a totally different generation because of how they were raised.  That is why it is dangerous to make those assumptions.  The key is to see everyone as unique; because they are.

Your employee retention strategies must approach every person as unique.  What motivates one person to stay with the organization is different than what motivates another.  Knowing that enables you to build an employee retention strategy that is unique to each employee.  If it sounds like a lot of work, you are right.  It is!  But, it is the only way to effectively drive employee retention…one person at a time.

Every employee is unique.  Until you face that reality you will never be fully effective in retaining talent.  Although there are some overall sound policies to drive employee retention, until you tailor your approach to each unique person, your success will not be total.  But, when you do, your success will be beyond your imagination!
