Negativity…Deal With It

Unfortunately, society keeps telling people that management is all screwed up and doesn’t care. Your people are bombarded with movies like “Office Space,” “The Devil Wears Prada,” and comic strips like “Dilbert” that depict management in a negative light.

As a manager it is a must that you lead by example. Don’t add to negativity by ignoring it or engaging in it. It’s like seeing a fire and letting it burn…or…in some cases like throwing gas on the fire. Unconsciously you may find yourself agreeing or joining in. First and foremost, you have to make sure you aren’t falling into that trap. You may not like having to complete a task given to you by your boss but you need to keep that to yourself. Bite your tongue. If you don’t you undermine the entire leadership structure.

More importantly, you need to address issues of negativity in your area. Ignoring the problem will not make it go away. At a minimum, you need to tell your people that you will not tolerate their complaining. Don’t get me wrong…I am not talking about people voicing their feelings to you…I am talking about the constant whining or complaining about the organization or about leadership. If you don’t address the complaining people will feed off of each other and before you know it you will have a department where everyone is miserable and nobody wants to come to work.

Why should you do it? Not only is it your job…it is also in your self-interest! By putting the brakes on negativity, you will have a group of people that are not distracted and can focus on their jobs AND you will avoid having an environment where you hate getting up in the morning to go to work.
