Sequel…Be Happy You Have a Job
Remember the CFO who told the person “Be happy you have a job?” I do agree with him…to some extent. And you know what….most people are grateful to have a job. Sure, they may grumble and complain at times. My question to the CFO is…..do you really care if they grumble a bit if they are doing a good job for you?
You may want to say “Be happy you have a job” but there is a better way to get the message across to someone that they should be grateful for a job. Educate them that job creation is not easy! Instead of “Be happy you have a job” he could say, “Well I have seen a lot of layoffs and pay cuts at other companies. We’ve tried to avoid that here.” You send the same message without being obnoxious about it. Your people may not acknowledge it, but in the vast majority of cases they know it and you have very easily reinforced it in a positive way.
Let’s take it a step further. At the next all company meeting, the CFO needs to start to explain what it takes to MAKE a profit…which keeps people employed, which provides health benefits, which allows for the 401(k) match etc. You get the picture. Unless someone has run their own business or has taken business classes they MAY NOT know what it takes and how lucky they are.
As a leader in an organization you have to get the message out properly, constructively and in a rational manner so people understand.
Lesson to be learned:
HOW YOU DELIVERY THE MESSAGE CAN MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE!
