We Play the Game…We don’t talk it!

Recently, my wife and I went to watch our youngest son compete in a CrossFit competition.  He never ceases to amaze me.  He is 5’5” tall and 145 lbs.  Not a big guy at all.  But, he bench presses 300 lbs, deadlifts 400lbs, and can snatch an incredible 235 lbs.   If you don’t know the significance of that…Google it!  He is an incredible competitor and can go head to head with guys that are far bigger than he is.  Why?  Because a lot of people talk about the game….he believes in letting his actions speak for him.  He plays the game!

As an employee retention speaker, I see the same thing with companies I work with on their employee retention.  Many talk about dealing with employee retention…others believe in doing something about it.  Here are the things the players do that the talkers don’t!

  • They train their supervisors and middle level leaders on how to retain people
  • Their senior management team and human resources lead the employee retention charge and they expect the middle to follow and support the initiative while they support the middle level leaders with the resources they need
  • They view their employees as people and not just employees
  • They know it is a LONG grinding process that you have to work day in and day out…not just a once in awhile thing…they are committed to lowering the turnover of their people
  • They believe that they will get the results that they want
  • They give their people C.R.A.P…Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise
  • They work the comprehensive process that I educate them on and don’t just listen and then not follow through
  • They try things and if they don’t work they figure out why and try something else until they find something that does work
  • They don’t do anything fancy…they focus on the fundamentals

I guess when it comes down to it, they end up being a lot like my son.  If you look at their organization you would say, “No way in hell that any organization can get results like that!”  But they do.  They do because they do the things that are mentioned about.  They do them when other organizations give up doing them.  My clients are not house hold names that everyone talks about…except when it comes to employee retention.  Their peers at other companies look at them and can’t believe the results they get.  And, ultimately, their success comes down to one simple thing.  They play the game…they don’t talk about it!
