The president of the company walks by an employee in the hallway and doesn’t acknowledge the employee as he walks by him. A supervisor snaps at one of her people instead of asking for something in a civil tone. A manager yells at an employee in front of an employee’s co-workers. Does this sort of behavior really go on in the workplace? You bet it does. All too often, unfortunately.
At a time when we are talking more and more about respect in the workplace we are seeing less and less of it in my opinion. In the next breathe we talk about how basic respect and dignity are an essential part of retaining employees. If we are are going to retain good employees we need to start with basic respect and dignity. It should be a basic building block of the culture of any organization. Aretha Franklin had it right in the 60’s when she talked about R*E*S*P*E*C*T. We need to take her words to heart.
