We have all heard the famous line from the movie A Few Good Men when Jack Nicholson tells Tom Cruise, “Truth…You can’t handle the truth!” The question is; can you as a leader handle the truth. When your people give you are given feedback by the people you lead, do you take it without becoming defensive? That is tough to do but when I am working as an employee retention speaker conducting employee retention strategies workshops, I emphasize the need for a leader to be able to do just that.
When one of your people comes to you with feedback, it is often very difficult for them to give their boss feedback regardless of how great the relationship is. They are generally nervous and a bit reluctant because most people do not take feedback well.
