The employment market is going to get ugly in the next 10 years. Heck…it doesn’t look that good right now for that matter! Employers are struggling to find the talent they need to run their businesses. This applies to carpenters, to machinists, to software developers, to people who will simply show up for work every day to flip burgers! There simply aren’t enough people who WANT to work who have the SKILLS to do what needs to be done.
Employers can barely find enough people to run their operations, much less grow. As an employee retention speaker and employee retention expert, employers ask me what is going on. I know what the cause is but this is not designed to be a societal or political rant! Who cares. If you are a leader or owner reading this, concentrate on what you can control. The time is now to take your game to the next level. If you wait 2 years to get on top of this, you will be behind the eight ball and never recover.
Now more than ever before you have to take what you can get and make something out of it. If you get a “C” player, you have to make them a “B” player if you want to get parts out the door. You need some “A” players? Find a “B” player and make them an “A” player. That might mean motivating them, listening to their issues and problem solving with them to address them or a whole host of other things you have not had to do in the past. Employees have more issues than they ever had. Get creative, get the training you need and sharpen your leadership skills. Assess the challenges your operation is facing and figure out the resources you need to bring to bear to solve the problem, get those resources you need and attack the problem. If you don’t have the will to do that…close the door now! And remember…C.R.A.P. works!
