Recently, this employee retention speaker and employee retention author was visiting a long-standing client.  As I was visiting with the General Manager, it was nearing the end of shift and there was a steady stream of employees walking by on their way out the door for the day.  Everyone said “hello” or waved “good bye” for the day.  A few stopped in and chatted for a minute or so.  This did not surprise me at all because I have known this GM for a long time.

Another important thing about his location is that it is located in proximity to the locker room.  When people go the restroom, it’s not at all uncommon for people to say “hello” or briefly engage the GM in some pleasantries or to discuss what is going on in the plant.  This GM loves it.  We laughed about the fact that it was hard to do much work with the constant flow of people.  He then stated what I was thinking that from an employee relations and employee retention standpoint, he has some prime real estate.  You couldn’t ask for a better location to be in if you wanted to interact with employees in order to get to know them and to stay in touch.  He told me that he wouldn’t give up for any other spot in the building!

This is a GM that get’s it!  He also has virtually no employee turnover in his facility.  People join the organization and they stick around.  It’s efficient, makes money and is a great place to work.  That’s not to say that greeting people and chatting with them is all that they do right but his approach is part of the Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.® (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) philosophy.  Part of Caring is getting to know your people, what is going on with them and the challenges they are facing.  Another part is being available.  This GM is available should one of his people need to talk about something.

If you are looking to build your employee retention, it’s a must that you interact with your people regularly.  It’s a key part of your employee retention strategies.  If you are looking for a way to impact your employee retention so that people can interact with you, you want to ensure that you have some prime real estate!

C.R.A.P works!
