This employee retention speaker and employee retention author remembers that advice as if it were yesterday.  I even remember where I was standing when it was told to me.  Recently, I gave that advice to a senior leadership group in an organization where I was talking to them about how to “Create a Culture of C.R.A.P.”  Then I heard many of the same excuses that I’ve always heard:

“The people know who I am…why do they need to see me?”

“We’ve got a lot of important decisions we need to make in a timely manner…we can’t be gone.”

“I’m a busy guy”

“We’ve got too many locations for me to get to all of them all the time.”

The list went on and on and on.  Then after they ran out of steam, this employee retention trainer said to them, “So, what your saying is your people aren’t that important.”  Then I proceeded to point out some of the notable accomplishments their people had recently achieved as well as some foul ups I knew about.  Then, I said, “Your people touch every aspect of your business…don’t tell me you don’t have time to talk to them.”   They got it.  They acknowledged that they get sucked into things that are less important and that they would do better at it.  Ironically, I felt like this had happened before…Déjà vu.  That’s because it had…more than once.  But, because it’s that important of a topic, I decided to write this sequel.

A month after my meeting, this employee recruitment expert visited again.  To a person, they all admitted that getting out of the office, going to locations and chit chatting with employees was one of the best things they did.  They were respected by their people for doing that.  People asked them questions and they gave them answers.  People respected that.  But, the biggest thing I heard was, “It was a lot of fun getting out.”   Wow!  That’s awesome.  Now, they have a taste for it and they love it.  They loved being able to give their employees C.R.A.P.  Showing that you care.  Giving and getting respect.  Showing appreciation.  Giving praise.  You do all those when you get out of your office and talk to your people.
