This employee retention speaker and employee retention author was recently speaking at a conference and the question came up of how to deal with people when they are spread over multiple locations.  I was a bit shocked by that as I came from some large organizations with large numbers of employees spread out geographically and we dealt with it very successfully.  At that time…believe it or not…email was just coming into use!  Technology makes it so much easier to be productive in remote locations that there is no reason not to visit them in person.

As an HR leader I made it a point to have a regular schedule where I would be in a remote location for 3-4 days in a row.  It was pretty simple.  I would fly in and then work out of the location.  It gave me time to schmooze  with people, work on projects with them, and still do other work while I was there.  Things didn’t just stop.  I would go to a location and camp out in a spare office and do work.  The key was that the people knew that the 3rd week of the month I would always show up.  They loved it.  I gave them the HR support they needed and wanted with a personal touch.  Then during the rest of the month, I communicated with email, phone and even snail mail.  I made it a point to stay in touch with them.

Today, this employee retention trainer sees boundless opportunity to communicate and work with some of the incredible aps that are out there.  Everyone that I know of has a smartphone and you can send out group messages, etc. etc.  It is limitless.  We should be able to have that personal touch with our people more than ever before yet, for some reason we don’t take advantage of the combination of resources at our disposal to do so and to use them to drive employee retention.  Instead, we allow ourselves to be separated and lose touch.

The key to enhancing your communication is to decide on what your strategy is going to be and use a variety of personal contact and technology that works for you.  The key is a planned strategy instead of taking an ad hoc approach to this stuff.  If you want to drive employee retention you have to be systematic about it in this complex world and technology truly helps.  Technology makes it even easier to Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.®  (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) and C.R.A.P.
