Just the other day, this employee retention speaker and employee retention author was meeting with a prospect that was thinking about having me come in to do a workshop with several dozen supervisors on how to give their employees C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) and to consult on their employee retention strategies.  This employee retention trainer always asks for the “nickel” tour so I can get a feel for the place even if the potential client doesn’t offer one initially.

When I arrived at the facility, I was amazed at the haphazard way that cars were parked and that there was debris and garbage strewn around outside of the loading docks.  My skepticism grew as I entered the building.  The offices themselves were worn but nicely maintained.  As we went through the shop it became immediately evident that house keeping was not a priority. There was dust and shavings from the product everywhere as I walked out onto the plant floor.  Banding that had been cut from pallets was laying on the floor and pallets and cardboard were strewn on the floor in various places.

Then we got to the bathroom which had just been remodeled.  It was serviceable but I cringed thinking what it must have been like prior to the “remodel” because it was not pristine by any stretch of the imagination.  The lunchroom was cramped and clearly needed a facelift as well.  As we toured, I noticed all people, including supervisors, walk by debris on the floor and not pick it up.  There was a clear lack of pride and enforcement by leadership on housekeeping.

If I were a new person applying for a job, I would look and think, “There’s no pride here.”  If I were a potential customer…I would think the same thing as well.  I would have doubts as to the quality of product being produced in light of the lack of pride that I saw in the house keeping.  Most people have pride in what they do and want to take pride in their organization.  When a new person looking to work at a place sees what I saw, they start out as a skeptic instead of a fired up new employee.  They might take the job with less enthusiasm and continue to look for a new job thinking “why should I work in a place with no pride.”  That combined with the fact that people talk with their friends about their work environments and when an employee hears that they are working in a dump, they begin to have doubts and misgivings.  Once a person starts to doubt, it’s over.  It’s only a matter of time before they find a new job.

This employee recruitment expert has said for years that your facilities are the minimum starting point in employee retention because it sends a very basic message that you don’t care enough about someone if the bathrooms are dirty the place where you eat lunch is grungy.  It’s about the C and R in C.R.A.P. (Caring and Respect).  If, they aren’t doing the bare minimum with their facilities, you can pretty much assume they aren’t going to show their employees Appreciation and Praise.
