Senior leadership all too often makes the mistake of not being as visible as they should be or, in some cases being virtually invisible to their workforce.  That is a major mistake in the opinion of this employee retention speaker and employee retention author.  If you are a senior leader and reading this, I will tell you without a doubt…People Want To See You!  If you are an HR leader you need to “encourage” your senior leaders to get out of their office, wander around the cubes or the factory floor, be visible and have them talking to your employees.

The reason that senior leaders need to be visible is that people WILL ask them questions.  When they do, hearing a response from a senior leader does carry more weight than when the HR leader gives a response.  Their visibility sends the message that they care enough about the people to take valuable time to “stroll” through the facility and interact with employees.  Employees know that senior leadership is busy and the fact that they are willing to spend the time strolling around and talking to employees powerful sends a powerful message that they care.

Another reason that senior leadership needs to be visible at this particular time is that people are scared because of the Covid-19 virus.  Seeing senior leaders reassures employees and shows that senior leadership is not hiding in their office while everyone else is expected to be working.  As this employee retention trainer mentioned in last weeks blog, the senior leaders of my clients do this, and people really respect them for it.  This employee recruitment expert spoke with another client on Monday of this week and the GM gets out into the shop at least two times per day so he is visible and available to the people.  How a senior leadership performs in this type of environment can make or break your employee retention strategies.  People are like elephants…they don’t forget…both the good and bad things you do!

Although these are clearly unique times, being visible and available to your workforce is not something that should be unique.  It should be an ongoing occurrence.  After all, how can you give your employees C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) if they never see you or you never talk to them?  Now is the time to get out of your office so you can Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.®  Why?  Because C.R.A.P. works to drive employee retention!
