When this employee retention speaker and employee retention author works with clients, I tell them to be creative.  With this client, that’s not necessary.  He is innovative and creative and always seems to find ways to get things done.  When they do lunches, they usually put on an incredible buffet from a top end caterer.  They tie it in to an accomplishment or milestone they have attained so that employees see the linkage between the lunch and moving the business forward.  In this case, they have gone more than six months without a recordable accident in a hazardous manufacturing environment.  This is quite an accomplishment.  It puts money on the bottom line and keeps people safe.  It is also a one of those great employee retention strategies that keeps employee turnover low!

Although they would LOVE to do a big buffet, it’s not possible because of potential transmission of the Covid-19 virus.  What they came up with was doing box lunches from a nice high-end caterer.  The supplier knows how to do the contactless delivery and my client has the social distancing, masks etc. down to a science.  They staggered the people getting lunches but still, the General Manager talked to small staggered groups about the safety milestone, why it was important and thanked everyone for their safe work habits.  It was a bit more work to do the small groups, but the GM got it done.  He kept communication flowing which is important to this organization.  Creativity works!

The most important thing in the mind of this employee retention speaker was that they got creative and found a reason to get together for lunch.  Lunches are part of their culture that has helped them build a sense of community.  They still had the camaraderie of eating lunch together…even while socially distanced and they celebrated an accomplishment.  I’ve noticed that during this pandemic, we have stopped celebrating successes…and most organizations are still having successes.  Just grinding this process out and persevering is a reason to celebrate.

Now more than ever it’s important to Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.® (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise).  People need that right now.  That’s how you keep the employee engagement up and the morale high.  Get creative.  Look for reasons to celebrate and have lunch!  Remember…Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.®  (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise)  Why?  Because C.R.A.P. Works!
