This employee retention speaker and employee retention author listened intently as the guy explained that he has essentially been doing the same thing every day for the past year.  They have him making calculations on projects that are the equivalent of doing math calculations ALL DAY, EVERY DAY!  Sounds exciting, doesn’t it?

The organization hired a guy with a masters degree in architectural design with the intent that he could “grow” into a greater role in the organization.  They saw an opportunity to get a high potential candidate.  Then, they have him doing boring, mundane tasks instead of sprinkling in tasks that are challenging that will grow his expertise.  After all, their stated goal was to grow him personally and have him grow in the organization.  With this in mind, he talked to the owner and told him he was bored. Yet, they didn’t listen, and listening is one of the best signs of Respect you can give a person…the “R” in C.R.A.P.  Growing your employees is also a sign that you care about people.  This covers one element of the “C” in C.R.A.P…Caring!

This owner had a tremendous opportunity to listen, react, and grow his employee.  He blew it.  He could have taken the opportunity and capitalized on this young guy’s concern and turned a negative into a positive.  He could have taken it to heart and started adding in more varied tasks that were challenging.  Self-interest should have taken place on the part of this owner.  Listen and Grow this guy so he stays!  He didn’t listen so the young guy quit and got a more interesting job where he COULD learn and grow.  His new employer has him doing varied, challenging tasks along with some of the mundane things that come with any job.

This stuff is simple.  Real simple.  It’s fundamental to any employee retention strategies.  This owner was presented with a golden opportunity to turn a negative into a very real positive and to work on the “C” and the “R” in C.R.A.P.  He didn’t do it.  Don’t make the same mistake as this owner.  Remember…Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.®  (Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise)  Why?  Because C.R.A.P. Works!
