The Covid-19 pandemic has served to highlight the fact that people love appreciation and praise.  How do I know that?  More people tell me at events that they aren’t getting appreciation and praise like they used to because it seems everyone is “grumpier” and, for whatever reason, we tend not to give it out as much when employees are working virtually.  It seems, those people who are working on-site get more appreciation and praise.

While doing an event at a venue, this employee retention trainer was talking with a staff member on the catering team serving my event.  He was wearing colorful suspenders and on the suspenders were various pins.  He was wearing “flair” right out of the movie Office Space.  I chuckled and told him, “I love your flair.”  He proceeded to tell me what they were for.  They were NOT “flair” he had to pick out for himself because management wanted him to wear more “flair” on his uniform.  Instead, the hotel had taken the poorly conceived Office Space program of “flair” and turned it into a positive.  “Flair” was given when people went above and beyond.  Each pin had a different meaning depending on what the employee had done.  Very similar to when I was in the US Army and you were awarded medals.  Every medal stood for something different.

As we talked further, he told this employee recruitment expert with great pride what each pin stood for.  He didn’t have time to explain if they did a ceremony when they gave them out as I had to get on the stage to speak and he had to take care of another event so we didn’t talk further.  What amazed me was the excitement and pride that was in his voice when he spoke about his “flair.”  Stuff that people consider “hokey” works if done right and done with the right intent.  Clearly, the organization capitalized on the “P” in C.R.A.P. and used it as a way to give their employees Praise.  Praise is critical to an organization’s employee engagement and to an organization’s employee retention strategies.

Get innovative.  Get creative.  Come up with ways to show Appreciation and Praise like this organization did.  The mileage you will get out of your creativity will be amazing.  Remember…Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.®  (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise)  Why?  Because C.R.A.P. Works!
