This employee retention speaker and employee retention trainer was speaking with a President of a company at an association event after the President had mentioned how they were messaging in their organization about the Covid-19 pandemic. Many organizations have done a horrible job of messaging and communicating during the Covid-19 pandemic. This employee retention author has written about this on numerous occasions. So, when I hear about great examples, I like to point them out!
This manufacturing organization, like others, deals with the issues of passing the Corona Virus from one person to another in their organization. They don’t have the luxury of having their people work out of the home. They use precautions such as social distancing, masks, temperature checks etc. to protect their people. However, the one thing they do better than any other organization is their messaging. Because employees travel to potential “hot spots” on vacation or to visit relatives, this creates risk when they return. The organization has done a great job of messaging to minimize this risk.
They regularly conduct meetings and always emphasize the need for employees to make good decisions. They emphasize that people need to protect themselves, their family and their co-workers. They talk about this message at morning huddles, events and town hall meetings. “Protect yourself, your family and your co-workers.” Simple yet to the point. They ask that if people go to “hot spots” that they let the company know and that they then self-quarantine for 14 days. Guess what…it works! Why? Because it shows they Care…the “C” in C.R.A.P. They are also reinforcing the sense of community that they consciously build in their workforce. Community is huge in employee retention, so their communication serves multiple purposes. Not only does it build community but it helps protect their people.
Your message matters! This is where the nuance of communication comes in that builds on the fundamentals of employee retention as well as building community. Yet, it’s still very common sense. Messaging will drive employee retention strategy. This President was presented with a golden opportunity to turn what could be a negative into a positive and to work on the “C” in C.R.A.P. and he did it!
