This employee retention speaker and employee retention author has heard some interesting comments over the last six months since the Covid-19 pandemic has been going on.  Recently, I’m hearing more and more how employees are starting to appreciate their co-workers more and more…the “A” in C.R.A.P. Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise)  In the past, people tended to have a love/hate relationship with their co-workers.  People tended to complain about their co-workers and seemed to nitpick about character traits, habits, etc.  We looked for what people did wrong instead of what they did right.  That seems to be changing a bit.

As the pandemic has gone on for a while, this employee retention trainer is hearing from people that they miss their co-workers.  They miss the chit-chat that used to take place in the office.  They miss the lunches and celebrations they used to have together.  They miss talking about their families and keeping up on what each other did over the weekend.  They miss that sense of community that is so important to any organization’s employee retention strategies.  There is now an appreciation for all the things that people working together bring to the experience of work.

It’s the belief of this employee recruitment expert that unless organizations come up with innovative ways to maintain their sense of community in a virtual world, they risk losing that sense of community and camaraderie that is crucial to employee retention.  Without that people connection/tie to bind employees to an organization, you will start to see employee turnover start to accelerate in organizations that don’t maintain that connection/tie.  I guess that’s not so bad as long as every organization becomes like that.  Then there is no better place to go.  But those organizations that figure it out will turn building a virtual community into a competitive advantage.
