This employee retention speaker and employee retention author sees it as a huge positive that organizations are actually thinking about bringing people back.  Earlier this week, I wrote on the fact that people are missing the camaraderie and sense of community that working together brings.  This camaraderie and sense of community is integral to your process of employee retention and it seems many organizations working virtually have not found ways to maintain/build that in a virtual world.  When this employee retention trainer compares my manufacturing clients who have continued to have people on-site with the experiences of organizations that have gone total virtual, the sense of community is like the difference between day and night.

For those roles that have been work remotely, leaders in the organizations this employee recruitment expert  has heard from have generally found that productivity has dropped, communication has suffered and many people…although not all…want to come back to working in the same space together.  The article talks about how offices need to be set up to maintain distance, common areas are off limits and sanitization needs to be upgraded.  Fortunately, for these organizations that are starting to go through it now, they can look to many large retailers, manufacturers and others as to what has worked and what hasn’t.  The article is most definitely worth reading.

In the article, one CEO expressed that unless you are manufacturing something and you can work virtually, you should continue to do so.  Maybe.  From an employee retention perspective, which is what I write on, you run the risk that your culture will suffer if you continue totally virtual and don’t start bringing people back in a responsible manner.  To me, organizational culture is what drives an organization.  It’s harder to give people C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) virtually.  People need C.R.A.P. from more than just an employee retention perspective.
