This was a great article because it brings up the issue of paying remote workers.  This is a new frontier for many organizations that never in the past had remote workers.  Neil Lappley brings up issues about what is the relevant market for determining pay, how to address the issue of pay with existing workers and what is the impact on an organization’s ability to attract and retain talent with remote work becoming more prevalent.  Of course, when the topic of employee retention was brought up, it caught the eye of this employee retention trainer and employee retention consultant.

The issue of pay and its relationship to retention is a topic that this employee recruitment expert tends not to address.  Why?  Because although pay is a component of retention, elements like Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise are the essential elements in retention.  That being said, if you screw up pay, it will prompt people to start looking because how you handle pay sends a message of Respect.  So, this employee retention speaker reached out to Neil Lappley and had an incredible conversation with him about the article.  This is going to be a major issue because we are in uncharted waters due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

One thing that came out of the conversation that I believe is important is that balancing remote work and maintaining a corporate culture is going to be a real challenge.  Zoom, Microsoft Teams etc. work but there is not the connectedness that exists when people are in proximity to each other.  I hear this all the time from leaders and their people.  There is a void.  People just tend to be more isolated and not as connected.  Because culture is key in driving results and creating a sense of community…which is integral to employee retention strategies…striking the appropriate balance is key.  Then, throw the pay dynamic on top of it and you have the potential for disaster.

As stated earlier, this is uncharted water.  Navigate it carefully and with thought.  Don’t shoot from the hip on this.  If you are going to consider messing with your pay system because more of your people are working remotely, do so with some knowledgeable guidance and make sure you are doing it with the C.R.A.P. mindset (Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise).
