This particular General Manager loves to stroll around the facility to stay in touch with people, chat with them, and see how people are doing.  It was apparent there was no particular pattern to his route.  If he saw something of interest, he would swing over and take a look.  It was an aimless stroll.  In fact, it was almost leisurely.  As we came up to people we said “hello” to everyone, talked with them about how the family was doing, what they have been up to aside from work and how they were holding up dealing with the Covid-19 virus.

People truly appreciated seeing the General Manager and genuinely enjoyed talking with him.  It was a casual event and not some formal “mission” to look for operational issues.  It reminded me of one of my early mentors who actually used to use the word “stroll” to do what he did and it was very similar to this General Manager.  So, when this General Manager mentioned the word “stroll” to me it brought back some fond memories because my mentor and I used to stroll the facility together twice per day…once in the morning and once in the afternoon so we could have contact with all three shifts because we worked 24 hours around the clock.

This employee retention trainer mentioned my past experience and we talked about how so many leaders don’t get out of their office and talk to their people.  He used the term “people” and not employees.  This guy truly gets it.  As we were wrapping up the tour/stroll, he said to me that “strolling is the fun part” of my day.  He then went on to say it amazes him that more leaders don’t get out into their facilities because it was fun and why would people not want to do it.  Clearly, this guy gets the C.R.A.P. Philosophy of Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise.  So…get out of your office…go for a “stroll” and have some fun!
