Like the old saying goes…Those who fail to plan…plan to fail. This employee retention trainer is not a believer in huge cumbersome plans. I guess the best way to describe my strategic planning is to have outlines that create a framework that can be filled in and refined during the year. My experience is that when you get too detailed, you never follow it, get frustrated and then quit doing it all together. With a broad framework, you are forced into certain key activities that help you to get some traction and then you can add to and refine it.
Some key areas that should be considered when looking at your 2021 employee retention strategies would be:
- Do you have planned activities such as town halls, regular employee check ins, department meeting, newsletters etc. that you are using to ensure employees are getting the information they need to do their job and that will shut down the always destructive grapevine?
- What are you doing to ensure your people are growing, staying on top of current trends and are preparing for potential opportunities in your organization so you can promote from within? You need things like tuition assistance, seminars, book clubs, cross-training, online learning, etc. Your goal is to ensure your people don’t become potted plants that don’t add value.
- How are all members of your leadership team going to remain visible so that they are on top of operations and are there for employees? Do your people have a routine of getting out in the operation (either in-person or virtually) and interfacing with employees? This is particularly important at this time of remote work and the pandemic. Many employees are isolated and need to interact with leadership even more frequently than before.
- R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise). How are you going to show people you appreciate and care about them? Are you celebrating success? Is your Employee Assistance Program (EAP) HIGHLY VISIBLE and are you watching utilization numbers? These things are more important than ever as the pandemic continues. Morale is suffering and what didn’t work in 2020 sure won’t work in 2021. Now is the time to get creative and figure out how you can increase what you are doing and become “high touch.”
If you don’t do your planning now, you won’t do it at all!!! It’s time to get on it because 2021 is not going to be an easy year. Your people need you now more than ever and you need your people now more than ever. Employee turnover is a real danger for 2021 because of what is happening in the world. Now is the time to get your employee retention strategy for 2021 in place.
