Frankly, this employee recruitment expert is worried. In forty-some years of doing this, I’ve never seen people more demoralized, more disengaged, and less fired up about work as I have since people stood on the assembly line punching out widgets in the 70’s. There is desperation out there yet, to this employee retention trainer, organizations are not doing near enough to help their people cope with being locked up in their home offices, grinding away 8-10 hours a day. Then they are generally stuck in the same house on the weekend. Plus, we are in the midst of a gloomy winter!
I have recently spoken with several of my clients and encouraged them to take immediate action and call on their EAP (Employee Assistance Program) to conduct emergency training with supervisors to educate them on what to watch for, steps they can take to help employees, and to bolster communication about the EAP to all employees. This needs to be a concerted and conscious effort. It needs to be a full-frontal assault on the problem of isolation that we are seeing in the workplace. With some organizations saying they probably will not bring people back into the office until July 1st and others saying it may NEVER happen, we have reason to be concerned.
As a huge proponent of EAP, it’s time to use this powerful tool in the fight. Most organizations have been paying for an EAP for years. Now is the time to truly use it. Push your EAP to generate new and novel ideas on how to be the most valuable resource you have to help your people cope with the impact of the Pandemic. Have them conduct refresher training for all leaders. Now is the time to truly put Caring into place…the “C” in C.R.A.P. If you don’t, your employee turnover will increase as more people look to get out of the situation they are in simply out of frustration. Moreover, others will struggle and become disengaged. Remember…Give Your Employees C.R.A.P.® (Caring, Respect, Appreciation, and Praise)
