The organization that we worked in was by all standards a tough industry and employee turnover was a real problem. As a young HR Leader, my boss/mentor (he was an old guy of 45 and I was 25) asked me for my ideas on how to solve the problem. When your young, you tend to focus on the “trendy” things that are in style at the time. So, I started telling him about all these great new things that I was hearing about that could impact employee retention. He looked at me and said, “Jeff, forget fancy fads…focus on the fundamentals.” That’s what we did, and we saw our employee turnover start to drop. I was thinking about my mentor the other day and got thinking about how the fundamentals worked for us. Then, I got thinking about all these places that put so much emphasis on ping pong at work and pizza every Friday to retain talent. What are they doing NOW to keep people when the vast majority of their workforce is working at home?
This employee retention trainer was never a big believer in “fancy fads” after my mentor taught me that it is really the fundamentals that work. He was actually the guy that taught me C.R.A.P. (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise) and that C.R.A.P. Works! Most or the trendy, fancy fad sorts of things are not going to address the issues that people are facing while being locked down in their house or tiny apartment and being unable to play ping pong or do pizza parties. Yes…I’ve heard some innovative ways to do those things but it’s not going to take the place of what people really need at this time. What people need is:
- Someone to ask how they are doing.
- Someone to listen to them when they need to talk.
- An EAP that is robust and can help them deal with issues.
- Someone that will tell them they appreciate them.
- Someone that is “virtually visible” and checks in on them.
- Someone to praise them when they hit it out of the park.
This is fundamental stuff that people crave now more than ever. Bottom line…It’s C.R.A.P. Unfortunately, many organizations and leaders are not doing these things at a time when they should be doing more of them. On top of that, take away their ability to have ping pong and pizza parties on Fridays. So, what are they doing? Probably nothing or not near enough. In these times of Covid-19 and lockdowns, now more than ever is the time to “forget fancy fads and focus on the fundamentals.” So much for ping pong and pizza parties on Friday!
