I was communicating with a colleague of mine that leads a company. She is a huge believer in employee engagement and having happy employees as is this employee retention expert. Although not everyone will be happy in an organization, I believe that you at least have to TRY to make your people happy. Why? Happy employees are more likely to stay as are engaged employees. Besides, I’d rather have happy and engaged employees than unhappy and disengaged employees!
Because my colleague knows I’m a huge believer in celebrating success, or for that matter celebrating in general, she mentioned an organization that had celebrated “National Grilled Cheesed Day” with their employees. They cooked grilled cheese sandwiches for everyone. They even had a kettle of tomato soup. The employees had a blast! They loved the event and the innovative nature of it. I love it because it’s a way to have some fun. As this employee retention trainer always says…you are running a company…not a prison!
I’m a huge advocate of celebrating success and milestones if you hit milestones such as scrap reduction, excellent patient surveys, passing scores on audits of various kinds, etc. This reinforces that employees impact the business and that they make a difference. Everyone wants to know if they are contributing to the success of the organization. Celebrations are a way to send the message that you Appreciate your people…the “A” in my C.R.A.P. philosophy (Caring, Respect, Appreciation and Praise).
If you are looking for things to celebrate, go to a website called Checkiday.com. . They have a whole host of ideas of things you can celebrate. Celebrations go a long way in creating an environment in which people WANT to be in! Celebrations are one way to show your people you appreciate them. If you are at a loss for things to celebrate, why not do Grilled Cheese!
