This employee retention speaker and employee retention expert loved being an HR Leader because I loved to have fun. Don’t get me wrong, I was serious about my job and believed in driving performance, but we always had fun in the organizations where I worked. Unfortunately, because of the Covid-19 pandemic, most organizations had to discontinue having lunches, potlucks, “get-togethers” and celebrations of successes the organization had. People love to socialize, and food is one thing that we all have in common…we have to eat! It is the great equalizer. When you tie it to the success of the organization, it is very powerful
This employee recruitment expert knows of several organizations that have started to bring back these types of events. Granted, they take far more precautions than they used to, but they have begun holding events and their people love it. Their leadership sees these events as part of their employee retention strategies. It is a part of their culture and culture is the one huge differentiator between organizations. That differentiation is what helps them recruit candidates and helps distinguish them in the eyes of their people when someone might be thinking about another job. Not many places are “fun” to work in.
This employee retention trainer wants those reading this blog to start thinking about maybe having a company outing or picnic again in the summer or even a holiday party come December 2022. Take a page out of the playbook of the organizations I have mentioned. If people are tired and grumpy because they have been working long hours and have heavy workloads, it’s time to inject some fun into your workplace. I mention “get-togethers” but there are a lot of fun things you can do besides “get-togethers.” It’s time to ask your people. I was smart as an HR Leader in that I knew I didn’t have all the answers, so I asked our employees. The out of the box thinking that occurred from our employees was amazing.
However you do it, it’s time to bring fun back in the workplace. Your people will appreciate it and it will help to start to re-establish the culture loss many organizations have experienced because of the lockdowns and other aspects of the pandemic. Your people will love it, it will help you build culture and make people happier!
